HR Charity Day – History

The HR Charity Day began in 2014, originally as an “Away Day” golfing trip to La Manga. During that first event, players competed for the Julie Harvey-Boyce Memorial Trophy, created in memory of Julie, a much-loved member of both the Hacienda Riquelme and Sucina communities who sadly passed away too soon.

Following the success of the inaugural event, it was repeated the following year – this time with a new purpose. It was decided that the day would become an annual fundraising event supporting local charities and good causes.

Although we still play for the Julie Harvey-Boyce Memorial Trophy, it is now dedicated to all our friends and community members who have passed away in recent years. With this broader meaning, the event evolved into what we now know as HR Charity Day.

The structure of the event has remained largely unchanged: a golf tournament in the morning, followed by an evening social celebration.

The golf competition has traditionally been held at Hacienda Riquelme and has continued to grow each year. By 2025, participation had reached 112 golfers, making a shotgun start essential to accommodate everyone.

The format of the evening event has transformed over time.

In the early years, around 40–50 guests attended a Dinner & Dance at various local restaurants. As interest grew, so did the scale. In 2025, more than 420 people came together to enjoy a Celebration Party in the beautiful gardens of El Cason at HR.

The primary aim of Charity Day has always been to raise as much money as possible for charities and deserving causes. We are fortunate to have the support of both corporate and individual sponsors – many of whom have been involved for many years – and we are always eager to welcome new partners who wish to contribute.

Traditionally, we make significant donations to cancer-related charities, alongside other organisations focused on supporting people in need within the HR and Sucina area. Over the years, beneficiaries have included:

•. Cancer relief initiatives  •. Sucina School (books and laptops) •. Aidemar – support for people with disabilities

  • Sucina Church Restoration Fund  •. Caritas – assistance for the poor  •. MABS – Cancer Support

The Charity Day is organised entirely by an unpaid team of volunteers. Every euro raised – after covering essential fixed costs such as evening entertainment – is donated directly to charities and good causes.

Even with a couple of quieter years during the Covid pandemic,

the event has raised over €120,000 since its inception.
